Espionage for the benefit of Russian special services

The German prosecutor’s office has is charged three Russian-German citizens for acting as agents of the Russian special services.

Persons named Dieter S., Alexander J. and Alex D., were accused of working for a foreign intelligence service. Dieter S. also allegedly participated in sabotage operations, as well as in photographing military facilities with the aim of endangering national security.

Dieter S. was originally arrested The Federal Criminal Police Office (aka Bundeskriminalamt or BKA) together with Alexander J. on charges of espionage. At the end of October 2024. so was Dieter S is charged being a fighter of the armed detachment of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (aka Generalbundesanwalt), Dieter S. was in contact with a person who belonged to the Russian special services and was also part of an armed detachment of the DPR.

“Since October 2023, Dieter S. exchanged with a person information about possible subversive actions in the Federal Republic of Germany,” said the General Bundesanwalt. “The actions were aimed, in particular, at undermining the military support provided by Germany to Ukraine against Russia’s war of aggression.”

In addition to expressing his readiness to carry out explosive attacks and arson of military infrastructure and industrial facilities, Dieter S. promised to carry out sabotage activities against railway lines used to transport military cargo.

In preparation for these attacks, the defendant gathered information about potential targets in Bavaria, including US military facilities, a loading dock in Upper Palatinate, and a tool manufacturing company. No later than March 2024, he was assisted in his efforts by Alexander J. and Alex D.

“Dieter S. scouted some targets on the ground by taking photos and videos, such as military vehicles and goods,” prosecutors said, adding that the intelligence was then passed on to his contacts.

Development takes place as Generalbundesanwalt brought charges against the Turkish citizen Mehmet K. on suspicion of working for the Turkish special services. In early November 2024, a US citizen, Martin D., was also arrested on similar charges.

“Martin D. until recently worked for the US armed forces in Germany,” officials said said. “In 2024, he contacted Chinese government agencies and offered to hand over classified information from the US military for transmission to Chinese intelligence. He obtained the information in question during his employment with the US Armed Forces.’

Cyber ​​security

Prior to that, Yatsi H. was a Chinese citizen arrested for passing on information to a Chinese intelligence officer. Yaqi X., who worked for a logistics company at Leipzig/Halle Airport, collected data on flights, cargo and passengers, with a particular focus on weapons and personnel associated with the German defense company.

The information was passed on to Jiang G., who was previously arrested law enforcement agencies in early 2024. According to the Generalbundesanwalt, the intelligence gathering activity took place from mid-August 2023. until mid-February 2024.
