Microsoft is further delaying the release of its controversial Recall feature for Windows PC Copilot+, saying it needs time to improve the experience.
There was development reported for the first time from The Verge. The AI-powered tool was originally slated for a preview release starting in October.
“We are committed to providing a safe and secure experience with Recall,” the company said in a statement said in an updated statement issued Thursday.
“To ensure we’re delivering these important updates, we’re spending extra time refining the preview experience with the help of Windows Insiders. Originally scheduled for October, Recall will now be previewed by Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs until December.”
Microsoft introduced Recall earlier this May, describing it as a way for users to explore a “visual timeline” of their screens over time and help them find things from apps, websites, images and documents. The search experience was intended to give computers a kind of “photographic memory” by recording all computing activities.
But since its initial preview, the feature has been plagued by all sorts of privacy and security issues, forcing the company to disable the feature by default. rebuild the system with improved controls to prevent unauthorized access and make it a choice.
“Copilot+, Recall and Windows PC development will continue to be managed SFI (Initiative for a Secure Future)”. said back in June.
“This is reflected in the additional security measures we provide for Recall content, including real-time decryption protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Signin Security (ESS), so Recall snapshots will only be decrypted and accessible after user authentication.”
