The FIDO Alliance said it is working to create one access keys and other credentials are easier to export between different providers and improve interoperability between credential providers as more than 12 billion online accounts become accessible with a passwordless login method.
To this end, the alliance said it has published a project for a a new set of specifications for the secure exchange of credentials according to commitments between members of a credential provider’s special interest group (SIG).
This includes 1Password, Apple, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Enpass, Google, Microsoft, NordPass, Okta, Samsung and SK Telecom.
“Secure credential sharing is a focus of the FIDO Alliance because it can help further accelerate access key adoption and improve the user experience.” – FIDO Alliance said in the statement.
“Passkey logins reduce phishing and eliminate credential reuse, while making logins up to 75% faster and 20% more successful than passwords or passwords, plus a second factor like SMS OTP.”
While access keys have the advantage of being secure and anti-phishing, they are essentially locked in the operating system or password manager service, making it impossible to transfer them when switching platforms and thus requiring users to create new access keys for each device.
A new specification proposed by the FIDO Alliance aims to close this gap with the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and the Credential Exchange Format (CXF).
They “define a standard format for transferring Credential Manager credentials, including passwords, access keys, and more, to another vendor in a way that ensures that the transfer is not done openly and is secure by default,” it said.
Development is going like Amazon revealed that more than 175 million customers have enabled access keys in their accounts nearly a year after the initial deployment.
“Access Keys are fundamentally changing the way we log into our online accounts for the better—and Amazon’s release of Access Keys shows that Amazon values its customers’ time, experience, and security when shopping online and on Amazon mobile.” said Andrew Shikiar. , Chief Executive Officer of the FIDO Alliance.
