Many people complained about the high ticket for domestic flights in Indonesia. Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said the price of airplane tickets in Indonesia is the second most expensive in the world.
In his personal Instagram account, Luhut explained that the ticket price for airplanes in Indonesia only lost to Brazil. Meanwhile, in ASEAN, Indonesia is the country with the most expensive average flight tickets.
“Compared to ASEAN countries and high-population countries, Indonesia’s flight ticket prices are the second most expensive after Brazil,” said Luhut.
According to Luhut, the price of airplane tickets in Indonesia is very expensive due to soaring post-COVID-19 flight activities.
“The high flight ticket price has been complained by many people lately, the cause is due to global flight activities which have recovered 90 percent compared to the situation before the pandemic,” Luhut said.
Data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows that there will be 4.7 billion global passengers by 2024. This figure is 200 million more than 2019.
Complaints about the high price of domestic flight tickets in Indonesia have been voiced by the public in the past few years, especially during the holidays.
When approaching the long 2024 Vesak holiday, for example, netizens voiced their anxiety on social media for various findings of domestic flight ticket prices. They said the price was “extraordinaryly unfriendly”.
One of the X users, who was previously Twitter, shared his experience on domestic tickets that were more expensive than overseas tickets.
He found plane tickets with the Pekanbaru-Medan route for IDR 1.5 million, very much more expensive than flights to Kuala Lumpur which only required IDR 200 thousand.
However, the claim of Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan which stated that the price of aircraft tickets in Indonesia was the second most expensive after Brazil was denied by aviation observer Gerry Soejatman.
He even revealed the opposite fact that the price of Indonesian plane tickets is easier than other countries.
“Based on the limited random complex earlier, it is cheaper for plane ticket prices in Indonesia than for other countries,” Gerry said, citing Kompas.
Gerry compared domestic plane ticket prices in Indonesia with domestic tickets in other countries such as Brazil, the United States (US), Italy, and Argentina.
For example, Jakarta flights to Denpasar, Bali, with a travel time of about 1 hour 50 minutes, the ticket price is priced at IDR 1.05. Meanwhile, domestic flights in Brazil from Rio de Janeiro to Sao Paulo with a shorter flight time, which is 1 hour 5 minutes, the ticket price is IDR 3.38 million.
“Brazil is expensive, really wears it,” he said.
All the prices mentioned are ticket prices sold by one of the online travel agents (OTA) for departures Thursday, July 25, 2024.
Even the price of plane tickets abroad does not include the minimum baggage price of Rp. 300 thousand. As is known, the price of airplane tickets in Indonesia generally includes 10-20 kg of baggage.
“So you say the second Indonesian (aircraft ticket) price is the most expensive, where is the basis?” he said.
Expensive plane ticket prices have an impact on the domestic tourism sector, such as Bali, which is one of the favorite destinations for tourists, both domestic and foreign.
The phenomenon of expensive plane ticket prices encourages travelers to choose to use private vehicles on the grounds that they can suppress expenses. But on the other hand, this causes traffic jams in the destination.
In addition, because it uses private vehicle transportation modes, it shortens the stay of travelers so that it has an impact on spending in tourist destinations.
“Because the price of airplane tickets is high, tourists from outside Bali use private cars to Bali and cause traffic jams,” said the chairman of the Karangasem Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), I Wayan Kariasa.
“Tourists who were about to take a vacation three to four nights, were cut off by traveling by car so that their stay time was also reduced,” added Kariasa.
The government’s efforts to aggressively promote domestic tourism with the Proud Travel Movement in Indonesia so that it looks contradictory following the exorbitant price of plane tickets.
As is known, Sandiaga Uno recently launched the Proud Made in Indonesia (BBI) and Proud to Travel in Indonesia (BBWI) national movement. This collaboration is expected to increase tourist visits from the archipelago to destinations in the country.
Kariasa feels that this slogan is in vain because people tend to travel abroad considering the cheaper ticket prices.
“Slogans that continue to be conveyed invite us to take a vacation in Indonesia will be in vain, if domestic flight tickets are high, because they prefer to vacation abroad,” Kariasa reminded.
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Uno ensured that the government had formed a task force or task force for reducing aircraft ticket prices. This is done as an effort to create more efficient aircraft ticket prices in Indonesia.
Kariasa appreciated the government’s move to form a task force (task force) to reduce aircraft ticket prices. He hopes that the program will not be temporary because people need long-term solutions because this is related to the community’s economy.
“If I think it’s good, the problem is, things like this have always been formed from the past. Even though what is needed is control over its sustainability so that it will not harm each other,” he concluded.
