TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Australian government warned its citizens to exercise caution while traveling to Indonesia ahead of the country’s general elections slated on February 14. The travel advice has been released by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through Smart Traveller Site on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024.
The government warned that frequent political rallies and possible protests are likely to occur before election day. “Expect traffic delays and restricted access to locations if protests occur. Avoid protests and demonstrations and monitor local media for the latest updates,” it wrote.
In addition to the presidential election, the Australian government also warned of possible threats of terrorist attacks in Indonesia as well as active volcanoes that can erupt without warning.
Australia also urged its citizens to reconsider traveling to Papua “due to the risk of serious security incidents or demonstrations that may turn violent”.
“There’s been tension, including demonstrations and violence, in certain towns in the provinces of Papua, Papua Pegunungan, Papua Tengah, and Papua Selatan in recent years,” the government warned. “Armed groups have stated that they’re targeting foreigners, including Australians. Our ability to provide consular support in these provinces is limited.”
The government also asked travelers to ensure that functioning safety equipment is available and comprehensive travel insurance is available. “our policy needs to cover all overseas medical costs, including emergency treatment and medical evacuation,” it added.
Another warning to heed is the possibility of petty and violent crimes in Indonesia, such as pickpocketing, spiked drinks, and crimes involving taxi drivers. “Solo women are at higher risk. Be alert in taxis, crowds, bars, and nightclubs,” the website wrote.
Despite the travel advice, Indonesia still attracts millions of Australian tourists each year with the power of culture, natural beauty, and affordable prices. Bali was Australia’s number one travel destination in 2023, according to Bupa Travel Insurance.
