Jakarta. Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi recently walked out of the room when Israeli Permanent Representative to the UN Gilad Erdan addressed the organization’s security body.
The UN Security Council held an open debate on the Gaza war in New York on Tuesday local time. During Erdan’s turn, Retno –along with other Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) members– decided to walk out.
“Minister Retno and the heads of other countries’ delegates walked out of the room when the Israeli permanent representative gave his statement,” Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesman Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said Thursday.
However, Erdan was also not present when Indonesia and other OIC members delivered their statement, according to Lalu.
In her speech, Retno condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent remarks that he would not allow a Palestinian state to exist.
“Indonesia strongly rejects this statement,” Retno said at the UN Security Council debate.
“This statement is unacceptable. This confirms Israel’s ultimate goal to wipe Palestine from the world map. Will the council remain silent in the face of such intention?” Retno said.
According to Retno, Israel must be held accountable for its atrocities in Gaza.
“No nation is above the law,” Retno said.
