The Indonesian government is exploring cooperation with South Korea to develop Small Modular Reactor (SMR) nuclear technology, intended to be utilized as a new energy source and for food preservation.

Deputy for International Economic Cooperation Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Edi Prio Pambudi, emphasized the importance of nuclear technology not only for the manufacturing industry but also for enhancing export quality through food irradiation.

“Nuclear technology is not just for destructive purposes; it can also be used for energy. Nowadays, many technologies are used for irradiation, preserving food to ensure our exports are reliable, such as keeping fish fresh longer,” Edi said on May 31, 2024.

Edi highlighted that SMR technology can also generate new energy to support the semiconductor industry, which will be a key focus for Indonesia’s future industrial development.

SMR technology is distinct from other nuclear reactors and will be developed in Gosong Beach, West Kalimantan Province.

Currently, Indonesia is developing Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN) for the period 2025-2035 as outlined in Government Regulation No. 14/2015 on the National Industrial Development Master Plan (RIPIN).
